Course Description
Students learn the fundamental questions to ask in order to analyze visual and written material. Students interrogate ideas, images, and texts within their rhetorical and historical contexts. They learn various tools for analyzing the structure of arguments and logical strategies. At the same time, students read texts that challenge them to reexamine the cultural realities we take for granted.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate cri0cal reading skills by iden-fying main ideas, textual viewpoints, the purpose of suppor0ng reasons and the uses of evidence, connota0ve meanings, in order to arrive a specific conclusions.
2. Formulate analy-cal ques-ons about the issue at stake, the purpose of claims and reasons, the use of language, the selec0on and interpreta0on of evidence, and how those support the conclusions of different types of texts.
3. Evaluate how various arguments use evidence , reasons and claims to support weak or strong sense arguments.
4. Construct your own strong sense analy-cal arguments by problema0zing issues, developing proposi0ons/theses, weighing counterarguments and claims, providing different types of reasoning, offering sound evidence, and reaching conclusions
